A metal-detecting grandmother with a knack for finding gold will see her latest find going on the auction block July 17 to be sold by Elizabeth Cottam of Chris Rudd of Aylsham, England.
The coin is an excessively rare ancient British gold quarter stater, probably minted by the Belgae of Hampshire c.55-45 B.C.E. It is one of only two now known.
It was discovered by Angela Stone Jan. 28 at Sutton Scotney, six miles north of Venta Belgarum (modern Winchester).
She is a 65-year-old with five grandchildren who has been metal detecting for over 10 years.
During this time she has unearthed no fewer than nine gold coins, all dating from the late iron age.
“I seem to have a Celtic connection,” she said.
