Faience Beaded Mummy Mask

$1,950.00

Comes with a custom purple hardwood stand. Originally sewn to the mummy shroud along with amulets and scarabs.

Thousands of years ago, the Egyptians hoped to achieve eternal life. They believed that the deceased would attain immortality if the body was preserved for resurrection and if the proper funerary rites were observed. The mummy mask aided the deceased in the perilous journey to the next world where it was believed that resurrection would magically occur.

The beads that make up this mask are made of faience, a paste made of ground quartz or of sand with a high percentage of quartz. The faience paste was pressed into bead molds and then fired. When fired, the glaze would migrate to the outside producing a smooth glassy surface. The quality and color of the glaze depended on the impurities in the paste.
