Vanadinite/Barite

$398.00

Vanadinite is a mineral belonging to the apatite group of phosphates. It is an uncommon mineral usually found in the form of red hexagonal crystals and is a dense brittle mineral. As a secondary mineral it is result of chemical alterations to a pre-existing material. Vanadinite is usually found in arid climates and forms by oxidation of primary lead minerals.

Barite is often an accessory mineral to other minerals and can make a nice backdrop to brightly colored crystals. It is a mineral composed of barium sulfate and is used as a “weighting agent” in oil and natural gas drilling. Barite is crushed and mixed with water and other minerals to be pumped down into the drill holes, which allows the rig operators to prevent the explosive release of the oil and gas from the ground. Currently, the majority of barite consumption in the U.S. is for drilling application.
