WWII Emergency Issue

After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor special silver certificate notes were issued with the overprint €œHawaii€. The serial numbers and treasury seal were changed in color from blue to brown. This was done as a precaution so that in the event of a Japanese invasion the currency could be declared invalid.

For US troops deployed to North Africa special silver certificate notes with a gold treasury seal in place of the traditional blue seal were issued. Should any of this currency fall into enemy hands it could be declared invalid.
