The 1715 fleet was a case of overloaded Spanish galleons foundering in a hurricane after delayed departure. Eleven ships went down, and nearly half of the 2,500 lives on board were lost. Some of the ships were salvaged, but the majority of the cargo was lost to the ocean and it is there that it remained for more than 250 years.
