Made by hand, a bilum is a string bag used by both men and women for a variety of purposes. The bag is made by “string looping” or by crocheting. Traditionally, the string used was handmade, normally from plant materials.
Made in different sizes these bags have many uses from carrying babies, personal belongings to catching fish. Some are also used as medicinal bags. Many times these bags have a ceremonial significance and may symbolize a person in mourning or a boy that is coming of age.
