In the quieter years of his rule from 262-267 sponsored vigorous intellectual renaissance in Rome. Toward the end of his reign while fighting the Goths, Aureolus revolted and while laying siege to Milan Gallienus was murdered by his senior officers and succeeded by Claudius II.
