The prominent connection to the umbilical cord depicted in these carvings is based on the belief of the Sepik people that one can live to a very old age if one has wisdom and knowledge and displays common sense. If you have none of these attributes, one may as well “remain attached to your umbilical cord” – referring to immaturity and lack of growth.

Referred to as “charms” by tribal hunters these figures are considered to bring good luck.
