The Songye people are based in the Congo and are most well known for their artwork. Most pieces are carved in wood although ivory figures are also known. Large important pieces are created for the use by members of a secret society called the Bwadi Bwa. These include masks known as “kifwebe” that have distinctive faces covered in curvilinear decorations.
