Characteristically, High Imperial lamps have a small discus, wide shoulder and a handle. In the first century AD, Roman oil lamps had reached a zenith in terms of quality. In addition, they were being made on a large scale and distributed throughout the Roman Empire. This lamp type has a closed body, often with geometric, animal or human designs in relief on the central portion.
