Luristan is the central province on Persia’s western frontier. A region of sweeping plains intersected by the Zagros mountains. The many small communities during the Luristan period produced a variety of bronze works. They are credited as the first peoples to cast bronze. The Luristan bronze industry was very sophisticated and highly prized in the ancient world for their fine craftsmanship and innovative design, often incorporating stylized animal motifs in the form. As casting methods improved, weapons were produced with the blade and holt as one piece. The flanged hilt was developed to allow for inlay in the handle.
