South African Krugerrands were first issued in 1967 and are legal tender. Each coin contains a full troy ounce of gold. Copper is added to the gold content to make each coin hard enough to resist denting and scratching. The obverse of this 22 Karat coin depicts Paul Kruger, President of the original South African Republic from 1883 to 1902. The reverse portrays the springbok, the national animal of South Africa.
