The American Gold Eagle was first released in 1986. The purity is 22 karat gold. American Eagles are authorized by the United States Congress and backed by the U.S. Mint. There are two types of eagles, Type 1 being those that were released prior to July 2021 and Type 2 being those released after. The only difference in the two types of gold American Eagleis the reverse. The obverse depicts a modified rendition of the Saint Gaudens double eagle. The reverse of the Type 1 depicts a family of eagles, the weight and denomination. While the reverse on the Type 2 depicts a close up of an eagle along with the face value and denomination. Note that American Gold Eagles can be used to fund IRA investments.
