The people of central and western Europe were referred to collectively as Celts by the Greeks and Romans. Divided into a number of different tribes and nations, they shared a Distinctive decorative art style, which was characterized by abstract curvilinear designs, including tightly coiled spirals and motifs incorporating lotus petals, palmettes, tendrils and the heads or bodies of mythical animals.
