Ibeji Twins

Due to the high rate of multiple births, the Yoruba feel that twins are extremely special and powerful and can make the difference for a happy and prosperous life.

If a twin dies, a deity is carved and decorated to represent the child’s spirit in an earthly form and is nurtured dressed and nourished by the mother and/or the surviving twin.
