Shiva became angry and cut off Ganesha’s head as He thought Ganesha was an outsider. To console Goddess Parvati’s greif, Shiva ordered His servants to cut off and bring Him the head of any creature. The servants found only an elephant which was sacrificed and Lord Shiva joined the elephant’s head onto the body of Ganesha.
